Permineralized Wood with Smoky Quartz from Arizona

Arizona permineralized wood with smoky quartz refers to fossil wood found in Arizona, frequently in the northern region, that has been transformed over geologic time into stone, with silica‑rich minerals, notably quartz, filling in its internal structure. In exceptional specimens, the quartz takes on the smoky or “druzy” form, creating sparkling surfaces of smoky quartz crystals encrusted over the woody substrate. These specimens retain the original wood’s cellular patterns and growth rings, now preserved in mineral form, while the smoky quartz adds a luminous, protective quality to the piece.

The formation process of such specimens begins with the burial of wood, often during the Late Triassic epoch, by rapid sedimentation, volcanic ash, floods, or other geological events, which limit exposure to oxygen and retard biological decomposition. As groundwater percolates through the sediments, it dissolves silica (especially from volcanic ash in the region) and carries it into the wood’s micropores, cell walls, and voids. Over centuries to millennia, that dissolved silica (as SiO₂) undergoes permineralization, crystallizing inside the wood structure and gradually replacing organic material, while preserving its physical structure. In some areas where fractures or decays exist, pockets open up—these voids may later host the growth of smoky quartz crystals (or sometimes other quartz variations like citrine or amethyst) that exploit space to grow in more free, crystalline forms.
