Rainbow Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, and is a variety of black obsidian that displays a stunning iridescent sheen of rainbow colors — including greens, blues, purples, and golds — when light strikes its polished surface at the right angle. This optical phenomenon, known as schiller or adularescence, is caused by the presence of microscopic inclusions of magnetite nanoparticles arranged in thin layers within the glass, creating interference patterns that diffract light into its spectacular spectrum of color. The finest specimens come primarily from Mexico, particularly from deposits in Jalisco, where the volcanic geology produces the richest and most vivid rainbow displays.

Metaphysically, Rainbow Obsidian carries all the powerful protective and truth-revealing qualities of standard black obsidian, but with an added layer of light, hope, and emotional healing woven into its energy. It is considered one of the gentlest forms of obsidian, making it especially well suited for deep emotional work — practitioners use it to gently cut through darkness, heartache, and depression, believing it to reveal the light and joy that exists on the other side of pain. Its rainbow iridescence is seen as a powerful symbol of hope and transformation, and it is strongly associated with the heart chakra, making it a favored stone for healing old wounds, releasing grief, and restoring a sense of wonder and positivity to one's emotional life.
