The Gerastos granulosus is a species of phacopid trilobite that lived during the Middle Devonian period, approximately 380 to 400 million years ago, and is among the most beautifully preserved and visually distinctive trilobite species recovered from the rich fossil beds of Morocco. Trilobites were ancient marine arthropods that dominated the world's oceans for over 270 million years before their extinction at the end of the Permian period, and are among the most iconic and well-studied creatures in the entire fossil record. Gerastos granulosus is particularly prized among collectors for its finely granulated exoskeleton, well-defined segmentation, and the remarkable three-dimensional preservation that Moroccan matrix specimens are celebrated for worldwide. The surrounding matrix, composed of ancient limestone and sedimentary rock from the Devonian sea floor of the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco, provides a stunning and authentic geological context that showcases this extraordinary creature exactly as it was entombed hundreds of millions of years ago.
