Benz Calcite with Pyrite — Tonglushan Mine (Daye, Hubei, China)

What it is
“Benz Calcite” is a collector nickname for calcite crystals whose terminations show a distinct three-pointed star/tri-radiate pattern that resembles the Mercedes-Benz emblem—often highlighted by a dusting or pinpoint growth of pyrite (and sometimes chalcopyrite) at the crystal tips.
From the Tonglushan Mine, Daye Co., Huangshi, Hubei, China, these pieces are especially prized for their bold calcite forms and metallic sparkle. The Tonglushan deposit is a skarn-type Cu-Fe system, a setting well known for producing striking calcite and sulfide associations. 

How it’s formed
Calcite commonly forms when mineral-rich fluids move through fractures and open spaces and then precipitate crystals as conditions change (temperature, pressure, chemistry). In hydrothermal ore environments, calcite is a very common “gangue” mineral that grows alongside other minerals in pockets and veins.
In the Tonglushan skarn environment, sulfide minerals like pyrite can form from sulfur-bearing fluids associated with mineralization; those tiny pyrite crystals may settle onto calcite faces or concentrate along the termination features, creating the signature “benz” look.
