Ethiopian Opal is a stunning and highly prized variety of opal known for its vibrant play-of-color and hydrophane nature, meaning it can absorb water and temporarily become more transparent. Mined primarily in the Wollo and Shewa regions of Ethiopia, these opals often display a full spectrum of iridescent colors, flashes of electric green, red, blue, and orange that seem to dance within the stone. Unlike Australian opals, Ethiopian opals are typically found in volcanic rock rather than sedimentary deposits, which gives them a unique internal structure and brilliant fire. Because of their porous nature, they require more care, but their energetic qualities are just as captivating as their visual appeal.
