The Mosasaurus was a massive and formidable marine reptile that ruled the shallow seas of the Late Cretaceous period approximately 66 to 82 million years ago, and is among the most iconic and awe-inspiring prehistoric creatures ever to have existed on earth. Related to modern monitor lizards and snakes, mosasaurs were not dinosaurs but rather highly adapted aquatic reptiles that could reach lengths of up to 50 feet, making them apex predators of the ancient ocean. The phosphate-rich sedimentary deposits of Morocco's Oulad Abdoun Basin are among the most prolific sources of mosasaur fossils in the world, preserving teeth, bones, and skeletal remains in exceptional condition due to the unique mineralizing chemistry of the region's ancient seafloor sediments. Mosasaurus teeth are particularly distinctive, featuring a robust conical form with a sharp pointed apex and a beautifully faceted surface of interlocking enamel ridges, designed for gripping and crushing the fish, ammonites, and marine invertebrates that made up their diet.
