Iridescent pyrite from the Fengjiashan Mine (also known as the Daye Copper Mine) in Huangshi, Hubei Province is among the most visually stunning pyrite specimens coming out of China, displaying a rainbow-like tarnish of blues, purples, and golds caused by a thin iron oxide surface layer that refracts light — a phenomenon known as iridescence or "tarnish patina." The Fengjiashan Mine is a large copper skarn deposit where pyrite forms in close association with chalcopyrite, calcite, and dolomite, and the iridescent specimens are typically found in the oxidized zones of the deposit. These pieces are highly collectible precisely because the rainbow surface coloration is entirely natural, making each specimen uniquely beautiful and a true standout in any pyrite collection.
