Sardonyx is a striking and historically significant variety of onyx that combines alternating bands of sard and onyx, two closely related forms of chalcedony within the quartz family. Sard is characterized by its warm reddish-brown to orange tones, colored by iron oxide impurities within the microcrystalline quartz, while onyx contributes its classic parallel bands of white and black. These distinctive layers form slowly over millions of years within volcanic cavities and sedimentary deposits, as silica-rich waters deposit alternating bands of differently colored chalcedony in rhythmic succession. The result is a boldly patterned and naturally geometric stone that has been prized by civilizations throughout history, from ancient Rome and Greece to Egypt, where it was widely used for cameos, seals, and ornamental carvings.
